Basic Turkish for Foreigners

For those of who will visit Turkey for a short duration or for those who have just started with Turkish, here are some standard phrases that you can learn quickly and put to use straight away.

Many sentences required for common tasks are provided which will be very helpful in day to day life.

How are you? => for singular & informal: Nasılsın? , for plural & for formal: Nasılsınız?
Thank you, I'm fine, and you? => Teşekkür ederim, iyiyim, ya siz?
I'm fine too, thank you,=> Ben de iyiyim, teşekkür ederim.


How old are you? => Kaç yaşındasın? (informal)
I'm twenty-five. => Yirmi beş yaşındayım.

Are you married? => Evli misiniz?
No, I'm not married. => Hayır, evli değilim.
Yes, I'm married. => Evet, evliyim.

Do you have children? => Çocuğunuz var mı?
No, I do not have children. => Hayır, çocuğum yok.
Yes, I have children. => Evet, çocuğum var.

What are you doing? => Ne yapıyorsun? or colloquially (shorter) N'apıyorsun?
Note, however, that both these sentences are informal
What are you doing today / tonight? => Bugün / Bu gece ne yapıyorsun?
Shall we (Let's) go to the cinema? => Sinemaya gidelim mi?

What time is it? => Saat kaç?
It's one o'clock. => Saat bir.
It's two o'clock. => Saat iki.
It's three o'clock. => Saat üç.

Where is the (train) station? => İstasyon nerede?
What time does the train to Ankara leave? => Ankara treni ne zaman kalkıyor?

What is the weather like? => Hava nasıl?
The weather is very good today => Bügün hava çok güzel.
It's rainy => Yağmurlu. It's cloudy => Bulutlu. It's sunny => Güneşli.
What did you learn? => Ne öğrendin?
Where did you learn Turkish? => Türkçeyi nerede öğrendin?
Your Turkish is very good. => Türkçen çok güzel.
I plan (intend) to take a Turkish course in Istanbul. => İstanbul'da Türkçe kursuna katılmak niyetindeyim.

I have to go now. => Şimdi, gitmem lazım.
We have to go. => Gitmemiz lazım.
Where do you want to go? => Nereye gitmek istiyorsun?
I want to go home. => Eve gitmek istiyorum.

May I take this? => Bunu alabilir miyim?
Yes, of course. => Evet, tabii.

Where have you been on holiday? => Tatilde neredeydin?
I love Turkey very much. => Türkiye'yi çok seviyorum.
What did you see? => Ne gördün?

Sibel Can is not a good singer. => Sibel Can iyi bir şarkıcı değil.

Boş odanız var mı? Do you have a room?

Tek kişilik odanız var mı? Do you have a single room?

İki kişilik odanız var mı? Do you have a double room?

Gecelik ne kadar? How much is it for a night?

Kahvaltı dahil mi? Is breakfast included?

Kredi Kartı ile ödebilir miyim? Can I pay with credit card?

Odada klima var mı? Is there air conditioner in the room?

Yakında iyi bir restoran var mı? Is there a good restaurant nearby
